Pierce County Young Democrats call for the Resignation of Ed Troyer
IT IS TIME. We've waited long enough. An independent investigation was launched over ten days ago. But Ed Troyer is still employed at the Pierce County Sheriff's office. Troyer needs to resign for the outright racist call that could have ended in the loss of life of another Black body.
It is reported that Troyer followed and confronted 24-year-old Sedrick Altheimer, a local newspaper carrier, while he was out en route providing local community members with access to the news. Troyer didn't stop there. He called for back-up, which led to a massive police response. He repeatedly stated that Altheimer was threatening to kill him. Troyer made that call knowing the effects it could have had on that black life. As a sheriff, Troyer is aware of the national climate. Furthermore, he is aware of the state and local climate regarding the loss of Black lives at the police's hands.
Here, in Pierce County, our law enforcement has been riddled with incidents that show their lack of respect for Black lives. Most recently, we were given further details regarding the death of Manuel Ellis. And The News Tribune's reported that local law enforcement disproportionately uses forces against People of Color in Tacoma. There are some significant problems with law enforcement here throughout Pierce County and the city of Tacoma. And Ed Troyer is at the head.
As a Black man, I have been profiled more times than I can count, from Georgia to Washington. All because of the color of my skin. Being from Atlanta, GA, I reflect on Ahmad Abrams of GA. I replay the trial of Trayvon Martin of FL. Both young black men lost their lives after being followed and confronted for just existing. Their outcome could have been Sedrick Altheimer's outcome. PCYD can emphatically state, we do not trust Ed Troyer. The public trust is fracture again. Troyer is unfit to serve and he must resign. IT IS TIME. We've waited long enough. Ed Troyer must go.
